The Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler, had several elements taken from different practices in his stylization. Around the mid-1880s Ferdinand Hodler’s life changed for better he became more and more focused in his experimentations with Symbolism and this was the time when he became closely involved with the advancement of the first Symbolist movement in Geneva. He started exhibiting his works and Ferdinand Hodler exhibited a self-portrait around this time, titled, “The Angry One,” which was showcased at the 1881 National Society of Beaux Arts, and in London. By 1885 Ferdinand Hodler received his first solo show in Geneva. This was soon followed by another one in 1887 in Bern. 1880s proved to be quite promising to her with his continued development in the path that was walked upon by the realists. Yet, this was the period when his realist paintings showcased Symbolist tendencies.  He created one of the most significant works of his life around this time, the portraits of destitute artists these works of Hodler were believed to have reflected a man's destiny. He painted another important work around then, titled, “A Glimpse into Eternity” and this was another significant one to showcase Symbolist tendencies with portraying an old man carving a child's coffin. He lost all of his family members early in life including his parents and siblings; hence he had an uncanny attachment to death and morbid art.
